 How to Record Video

VLC provides a variety of options for recording videos. You can make a video recording of a movie/video you are watching, record your desktop or even record yourself using a webcam or a similar input device. These recordings can also be saved in a variety of formats.

Recording a video content
*************************

VLC can record any video content it can play by using the :guilabel:`Record` button, as described in :ref:`Using the Record button`.

Recording your Desktop
**********************

1. Select :menuselection:`Media --> Open capture Device` or press :kbd:`Ctrl+C`, then under capture mode click the **Dropdown menu** and select :guilabel:`Desktop`.

2. Under options set your desired frame rate.

3. Click the arrow attached to the play button then select convert or press :kbd:`Alt+O`.

4. Under profile click the dropdown to select your desired output format.

5. Click browse to select a save location.

6. Click start to commence the recording.

7. Click the stop button |stop| to stop recording. Your video will be stored in the destination you chose.

Recording your Webcam
*********************

1. Select the webcam device:

        - Select :menuselection:`Media --> Open capture Device` or press :guilabel:`'Ctrl+C'`,
        - then under capture mode click the **Dropdown menu** and select :guilabel:`DirectShow`.

   .. tab:: On Macos
        
        - Select :menuselection:`Media --> Open capture Device`,
        - select :guilabel:`Input devices` in the **Dropdown menu**,
        - then click on the :guilabel:`Video` checkbox.
